Maison de la Rose Blanche

Our ‘maison d’maitre’ lies in the centre of the village and opposite the main church. It is hard to date the actual building, but the ground floors were re-laid in 1880 and bear the initials ‘A.W’ who we think may be the person who laid it. While squirreling around when we first moved in, we found numerous ledgers and documents which show that the owners (the Martin family) had been wine and grain merchants at the turn of the century but in more recent years (1940’s) the house was used as a bar and restaurant.

Please take time to look at the photos of how the house looked when we first saw it back in October 2004.

Thiat Village

Nestled amongst the medieval towns of Montmorillon, Le Dorat and Bellac, at the top of a hill, is the charming and unspoilt village of Thiat which is surrounded by the beautiful Limousin countryside.
There is a fascinating history attached to Thiat which includes the Black Prince destroying the original village nearby. The survivors moved to the present site and founded the village as it now stands.

The locals are very proud of their village and the Mayor is particularly keen to ensure that a vibrant and active community is maintained. To this end, there are numerous celebrations and fetes throughout the year. Any new members of the village are welcomed and made to feel at home. This is certainly something we felt when we first arrived, and included many more villagers walking their dogs along the main road when our furniture lorry arrived from England!

The village has a main shop selling everything from fly paper to bottled gas. You can even fill up your car with petrol at a very competitive price! There are many rivers nearby which form numerous lovely walks.
